Solving the challenges of an aging demographic

Everyone has a method through which they solve problems best. Some people can argue their way out of anything, some people can solve problems better on paper, some people work better in a team and some work better alone. Everyone has a method of problem solving that comes naturally to them, and mine is to build things.
My whole life I have solved problems by building a solution. In high school, I built software to help disabled kids learn more efficiently. In my first job, I worked on construction sites and eventually built software for one of the largest condominium builders in Canada. There is no reward to me that is greater than the accomplishment I feel when I build a solution to a problem. There is no problem that is insurmountable, especially when that problem is affecting the lives of others.
After spending nearly 30 years with that condominium builder in a CIO position, my capacity for building solutions began to outgrow such an environment. I wanted to build solutions for more than one company and solve problems that spanned beyond one industry. The knowledge and connections I gained from my time there have been invaluable in creating SmartONE Solutions and the unique partnerships that make it what it is. That condominium builder is still an integral part of the vision, but the potential impact and applications of this platform are much broader.
If a network could go into a condominium and connect a community including the concierge, tenants, and common areas, it could also connect a retirement home, a university, or a hospital. If sensors and cameras can be used to provide security and services to condo residents, they could also detect someone falling, measure their vitals, or deliver other relevant services to help people age in their home. The applications of a central network go beyond solving the problems of only condo dwellers; it has the potential to solve problems affecting a wide variety of people living in different kinds of communities.
In a partnership with Toronto Rehabilitation Institute called PATH (Program to Accelerate Technologies for Homecare), the SmartONE solution will be installed in Universities and research labs across the country to bring assistive care technology to the commercialization stage. It is backed by the support of a government grant called AGE-WELL, which aims to foster the development of assistive technology for the aging population. This partnership really encapsulates my motivation behind building this solution. It is an aggregate of some of the greatest problem solvers I have met during my career, working together towards tangible solutions for Canada’s changing demographic.
SmartONE Solutions is an open platform, a network onto which services can be developed and seamlessly integrated into communities. There is no ceiling to what we can build, and the problems we can solve with it.
