Glass ceiling still tough to crack

Kudos to three leading women IT executives in Canada who were recognized for their outstanding achievements in 2011. In December, Dr. Catherine Aczel Boivie and Susan Doniz were on the Top 100 list of Canada’s most powerful women, released by WXN (Women’s Executive Network), Canada’s leading organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of women in management, executive, professional and board roles. Two months earlier, Gale Blank, VP & CIO of Wal-Mart Canada Corp, was named one of ten IT executive “2011 Breakaway Leaders” at the Global CIO Executive Summit in South Carolina.
I’ve known Catherine Boivie for many years. Based in Vancouver, she has long been one of the West Coast’s leading CIOs. Today she is Senior VP, Information and Technology Management, for Vancity, and Chief Executive Officer of Inventure Solutions. Catherine is one of these people with boundless energy and a passion for applying it in all sorts of creative and beneficial ways. She is a real pioneer of the CIO profession in Canada. As founding president of the CIO Association of Canada, she was instrumental in launching that influential organization. She’s also received several prestigious honours for her work over the years, including the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance’s 2008 Chief Information Officers Leadership Award, and Gartner’s 2003 North American IT Executive of the Year Award for Midsize Enterprises.
I first met Susan Doniz a few years ago at a roundtable I conducted while editor of CIO Canada. At the time, she was CIO of Procter and Gamble Canada. Shortly after, I interviewed her for an article I was writing on the use of social media by corporations. I remember coming away from that interview being most impressed. What Susan and her colleagues were doing at P&G with social media was definitely out on the leading edge for Canada at the time. Susan’s career has continued to be exemplary. She is currently SVP and CIO of Amia, and she is on the Board of Directors of the CIO Association of Canada and the Board Centre of Outsourcing & Research. She is also on the National Advisory Board of the Salvation Army.
I have not yet met Gale Blank, although she’s on my ‘people to meet bucket list’. Her career, though, has been a stellar one, especially in the retail sector, where she has been SVP Supply Chain, CIO at Indigo; VP & CIO at Eatons; and VP ISD East at Loblaw Companies. She’s also been an Associate Partner with IBM Canada, and CIO, Department of Canadian Heritage, with the Federal Government.
The fact that these three women have performed in such outstanding fashion at the top of their profession begs the question, “Why aren’t there more women in the senior ranks of IT?” I have a pretty extensive network of IT executive contacts, which I’m certain is representative of the industry, yet only about one in every seven or eight are women.
Clearly, women have the ability to excel as IT executives. I suspect that the reason so few of them attain C-level IT positions has something to do with the profession itself – perhaps IT management simply doesn’t appeal, as a career path, to as many women as it does men.
But I’m sure there’s a lot more to it than that. Unfortunately, the glass ceiling exists in IT management as it does in many other professions – much to the detriment of Canadian organizations, which could benefit greatly from this tremendous underutilized talent pool. Sadly, the glass ceiling seems every bit as resilient now as it did five years ago.
