Stop poking the CIO in the I

Pity the poor CIO. Seems like every time you turn around, somebody’s trying to poke his or her ‘I’ out.
The once venerable title Chief Information Officer is now passé – no longer suitable, according to the pundits. These days it’s all about innovation; it must be Chief Innovation Officer. Or it’s all about intelligence; it must be Chief Intelligence Officer. I’ve even heard Chief Imagination Officer, which should only be allowed if you work for The Walt Disney Company.
My Concise Oxford Dictionary has 46 pages of I’s, so this could go on forever.
In order to save us a little time, allow me to cut to the chase and offer up the best new titles for CIO that are likely to emerge over the next decade or so. That way we can play with them now, quickly grow tired of them, and get back to good old Chief Information Officer.

Chief iThing Officer: Hip IT executive in charge of all things i, including iPhones, iPads and the soon to be launched iPants (you heard it here first).
Chief Ignorance Officer: Fast-tracking IT executive with responsibility for storing and analyzing the growing mountain of data on all the stupid things being done by the organization (Big Dumb Data). Great career prospects.
Chief Irresistible Officer: Dynamic IT executive whose creative fervour and irresistible will to succeed will be piteously dashed on the immovable object of the CEO.
Chief Imbibing Officer: Burned out IT executive driven to drink* by overexposure to unruly users and overlong adherence to the corporate mantra “Do more with less”. *drink may include any of the following: alcohol, Alka-Seltzer, energy drinks, laxatives, Coca-Cola or coffee – lots and lots of coffee.
Chief If-pigs-had-wings Officer (aka CIPHWO, pronounced sifwoe): Imprudent IT executive frequently overheard mocking senior management’s fatuous and unworkable technology demands. Often earmarked as the executive most likely to become CFO (Chief Fired Officer).
Chief Inconsolable Officer: Hollow-eyed IT executive in charge of career-defining ERP implementation going horribly wrong. Expression frequently mimics that of the engineer of a fast-moving freight train at the moment of realization that the bridge over the gorge is out.
Chief Inspiration Officer: Enthusiastic IT executive bent on rallying the user community, largely through the use of quotations from acknowledged thought leaders such as Homer Simpson, “Trying is the first step towards failure”, and Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, ““Stupid, yes. Also dumb. But it is something we’ve gotta do.”
Chief Impoverished Officer: Despondent IT executive with too little staff, too few resources and no budget. Interchangeable term for all Canadian CIOs living outside the Calgary area.
Well, there you have it. That should keep us well stocked in alternative CIO titles for the next decade or so. Until then, I’ll stop poking you in the I.
