A Glimpse into the Data-Driven Future: Interview with Paul Lewis, CTO, Americas at Hitachi

In this interview, Paul Lewis, Chief Technology Officer, Americas at Hitachi, discusses how organisations will apply data driven strategies to effectively compete in the future. Paul’s background as a leading technology practitioner, considering the needs of consumers and how organisations apply technology to meet those today, strongly influenced his comments.

The interview discusses the impact that information technology will have on people and organisations in the future. Paul points out that technology based innovations can make the world better through combining people, machines and data. He argues that increasing consumer use of information technology has driven the use of technology by organisations. Consumer expectations of the nature of the services that will be available to them, are influenced by their experience with the personal technologies that they use today.

Paul stresses that data will be at the centre of the digital transformation that will take place over the next few years. As information technology increases the amounts of data that are gathered, this opens up new possibilities for organisational change. The benefits that are possible from the internet of things, virtual and augmented reality and our use of predictive algorithms and artificial intelligence are enabled and enhanced by increasing data availability.

This new technological environment will transform peoples’ lives. New customer centred services are emerging that are more tailored to their needs and more easily accessible. Paul discusses the impact that this will have on the retail sector where customers shopping processes will be significantly different to those which exist today.

Machine data is an important element of this new world. Machines (Paul uses the example of the Bullet Train in Japan), will gather data and communicate with each other to improve our quality of life. In Paul’s example, he imagines the train in Japan exchanging data with weather and seismological data gathering equipment and reacting by moving the train to a safe location in response to a tsunami. Applications of machine data will expand rapidly over the next few years.

Smarter cities will also take advantage of these technologies which Paul believes will result in more customer focussed services. Machine data will be used to integrate information from a range of sources to provide services that make life smoother for citizens. For example, transit service information may be integrated with weather information and used by personal calendaring apps on smartphones to advise on your route to an appointment and the time that you need to leave.

Businesses will see digital transformation that will influence strategic business change. Paul describes how AirBnB illustrates that technology is changing business models. These changes will be based on four factors: the growth of the cloud, the rise of new technologies, including augmented and virtual reality, a stronger focus on the customer and the development of new business models – especially those with a marketplace focus.

Paul considers the impact that all of this will have on the Information Technology function in organisations The increasingly data centric focus of technology will change the work that IT departments do. Now, the need to manage data as an object – as an asset and tool of the organisation - will become an increasing part of the IT role. This role will include considering issues in data governance (how will the security and privacy of data be appropriately ensured) and issues in how the business functions will use the data itself.

Peter Carr’s work focusses on the impact of information technology in society and its application within organisations. He is the Director of three online certificate programs at the University of Waterloo in Technology Entrepreneurship, Project Leadership and Social Media for Business Performance, for working professionals.
