UOIT conference showcases many sides of Innovation

A wealth of dynamic new ideas and technologies were front and centre at the recent Innovation 2013, a one-day conference produced by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s (UOIT) Faculty of Business and Information Technology in association with One Million Acts of Innovation, a non-profit group working to stimulate Canadian innovation by connecting people and sharing inspiring ideas. The IT Media Group was UOIT’s media partner for the event.
About 140 business leaders, IT executives, faculty and students gathered at UOIT’s Oshawa, Ontario campus in mid-June for a slate of thought-provoking presentations and workshops.
Rejean Bourgalt, VP, Avaya, set the tone for the day with his presentation “Passion for the Future – Technology Megatrends and the Next 50 Years”. Bourgalt took the audience on a whirlwind tour of fascinating technologies, starting with some of today’s leading-edge innovations. Silicon Valley-based electric car manufacturer Tesla, he noted, is challenging the traditional dealer approach to selling cars by opening its own showrooms in upscale areas and designing them more like Apple stores, allowing visitors to design and order their new Tesla on a showroom computer.
Philips Hue light bulbs, costing about $60 apiece, can be controlled via a smart phone or tablet through an existing home Wi-Fi router, in conjunction with an app for Android and iOS, he said. These bulbs enable users to create a variety of lighting effects, such as custom colours, colour combinations and varying intensities. They even allow the user to create lighting schemes based on favourite photos.
Turning his focus to future technologies, Bourgalt talked about the coming of personal bio monitors that monitor an individual’s health on a real-time basis. He said that in the future a person might be walking down the street and have an ambulance pull up to him to provide medical care minutes before he is to have a heart attack.
Bourgalt’s advice to the audience was that managers need to mentor Gen Y and the Cyber Generation, and be mentored by them.
Jerry Boyer, Director IT Canada at GlaxoSmithKline, talked about “The Digital World from a Business Perspective”, starting with a look back at the roots of IT in the business world, when IT had “the secret”. He contrasted those “good old days” when IT had everything under its control with what’s going on today. “It’s a wild world right now,” he said. “There’s so much going on. Technology has become part of our lives.”
Susan Dineen, Executive Director, Fox Group Consulting provided the audience with many insights into “Disruptive Forces in Digital Media”. Disruptive forces include TV migrating to the Internet, the integration of social networks into TV viewing, time-shifted consumption (viewers don’t want ‘appointment TV’)
Key trends, she said, are: audience engagement as the primary focus; optimized exploitation of social networking; apps on ITV and other devices allowing viewers to, for example, play along with reality TV and get into the action; exclusive content; and the ability to earn rewards., and the introduction of over-the-top services such as YouTube and Netflix.
Following this look at the digital media space, Neil Schneider, Manager of Immersive Technology Services at UOIT’s Faculty of Business and IT, took participants into the realm of stereoscopic 3D gaming and virtual reality in a presentation entitled “Technology Showcase”.
Describing immersive technology as “anything that makes you feel like you’re inside the environment”, Schneider talked about recent big advancements in stereoscopic 3D and haptics, or tactile feedback technology. In particular, he pointed to Oculus Rift, a next-generation virtual reality headset designed for immersive gaming, as a game-changer in the immersive technology space.
Following lunch, the focus of Innovation 2013 turned to three concurrent workshops. Scoring high marks for audience participation and sheer fun was “Second City’s Approach To Innovation, Creativity And Collaboration For The Connected Digital World”, presented by Sandy Marshall, VP, Second City Communications, Kevin Frank, Artistic Director, Second City Communications Training Centre, and Taimour Zaman, managing director, One Million Acts of Innovation.
