Cloud Integration & the CIO

While Cloud continues to gain momentum in most organizations, it still brings with it a number of challenges, one of the biggest being integration with on-premises applications. We’ve heard plenty of comments regarding integration issues at IT Media Group Master Series Roundtables across the country, and a great many surveys, reports and articles in the public domain point to the organizational damage they do.

For example, a survey by research firm Dynamic Markets entitled “Cloud for Business Managers, the Good, the Bad, the Ugly” found that one in two organizations abandoned a Cloud application in the three years prior to the survey due to integration problems, and 54% of businesses missed project deadlines in the six-month period prior to the survey due to Cloud integration problems.

For CIOs, the challenge is going to become even bigger. As more and more Cloud solutions enter the organization, Cloud-to-Cloud integration issues may be looming, and integration paths will grow ever more complex.

With Cloud having put them in this position in the first place, many CIOs are wondering when the Cloud will provide a solution to their integration problems. Well, they won’t be finding a silver bullet any time soon, but there are some things happening that may ease their pain.

Wrote George Gallegos, CEO of Jitterbit, in a Jan. 19, 2015 article in Information Week entitled, Integration Moves Into The Cloud In 2015, “Companies are using cloud services brokerages, such as BlueWolf and Cloud Sherpas, to manage the impact from the recent explosion of endpoints the modern enterprise requires. Cloud services brokerages will play a greater role in enterprise technology, helping to bridge the gap between central IT decision-makers and line-of-business users clamoring to adopt the latest solutions. “

It’s early days yet, but integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) is also beginning to gain a foothold in the marketplace, holding out the promise of much better integration services in the future.

This spring, Gartner released its 2015 “Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Integration Platform as a Service”, describing iPaaS as “a suite of cloud services enabling development, execution and governance of integration flows connecting any combination of on premises and cloud-based processes, services, applications and data within individual or across multiple organizations.”

What kinds of functionalities can be found in iPaaS? Gartner lists them as: support for a variety of connectivity protocols, data/message mapping and transformation, routing and orchestration, adapters for cloud-based and on-premises applications, adapter developer toolkits, API management, integration flow development and management tools, cloudstreams, and more.
Unfortunately for CIOs, iPaaS is still in its formative stages. Only one vendor in the study earned more than US$50 million in revenue in 2014, while most generated less than $10 million. Gartner predicts the rapid appearance and disappearance of new providers, with mergers and acquisitions being the norm over the next three to five years.

Three to five years – yikes! By then most angst-ridden CIOs grappling in isolation with this problem will be staying at the Happy Valley Rest Home for Over-stressed IT Executives. Or they will have avoided this fate by attending one or more of The IT Media Group’s CIO group therapy sessions (Master Series Roundtables) on coping with Cloud integration issues.

Our next one takes place in Toronto on October 8. You can ensure an invitation by filling out our short VIP registration form.
