CIOs stand on shifting corporate sands

It’s growing increasingly apparent that the times they are a’changing for IT executives, perhaps more so now than ever in the history of enterprise IT.
That home truth came through loud and clear at The IT Media Group’s two recent CIO Master Series roundtables – one in Toronto and one in Calgary – both sponsored by IBM Canada. The events were held in early March, 2014.
In the Calgary session, where a 13-member roundtable delved into the issue of "Future-Proofing the IT Organization", several IT executives agreed that the business has already largely taken over traditional IT responsibilities such as project management, budget and delivery, sometimes cutting IT out of the process entirely.
It surprised me, in fact, how far advanced this shift has already occurred in some of the participating organizations, and how matter-of-fact their IT executives were about the fundamental change to their role within the organization. Rather than seeing it as an ominous erosion of power, as some alarmists might, these executives merely regarded it as a natural evolution which is unlikely to threaten their jobs, and which may simply lead to more focus on other areas of work within the company, such as fostering innovation and focusing on Cloud architecture. Some pointed to information technology’s integral role in corporate processes as a bastion of strength and a de facto source of power for the IT organization moving forward.
IT executives at the Calgary roundtable also seemed pretty much resigned to a simple support role for IT, rather than one that requires a seat at the C-suite table. As one participant put it, “You know, the table’s not that great all the time. Just stop asking for it and come to the table and get over yourselves a little bit.”
Although participants at the Toronto roundtable, which focused on “Putting Business-Value Creation on Steroids”, didn’t broach the subject of IT and the C-suite, it was nonetheless clear that in their region business is driving the bus and is very proactively seeking to introduce IT-enabled business solutions into the organization. Consequently, to be successful, it is absolutely imperative for the CIO and IT to find ways of “saying yes to the business”, rather than acting as a gatekeeper and an impediment.
Said one roundtable member, “It's having governance with the culture of yes. If it's the old mentality of governance with an iron fist, they are only going to knock on your door a couple of times and then they are going to go around you.”
Said another, “What I found effective was not shutting down [shadow IT with outside vendors] and being the bad guy, but instead trying to insert ourselves into those relationships. Maybe it was oversight from a project perspective, working with the vendor; maybe it was adding value by integrating some backend data we had within our control. It was a baby step approach.”
Clearly, there are similar dynamics going on in both Toronto and Calgary – and no doubt across the country and around the globe – when it comes to the changing role of IT within the organization. With the advent of Cloud and Software as a Service, and with technology vendors and consulting firms increasingly focused on working with the business to implement solutions, it is incumbent on IT organizations to be willing and able supporters of this shift towards a much larger role for the business in the way IT solutions are introduced and implemented. As one Toronto attendee put it, “The phrase I'm using in our organization is ‘IT as broker’. Our job is to broker what you want, not to judge what you want.”
That’s not to say that all or even most IT organizations will soon see the end of traditional roles such as project management and implementation. For some the transition away from these roles will be quick; for others it will be glacial.
But whatever the pace, the times they are indeed a’changing for IT executives. And if they are to have long and vital careers, they better find ways of changing along with them.
